Heat Lightning

Out of the house and into the night
flashes distract me from myself

dark white anvils flicker like loose bulbs
lightning then off lightning then off

I reach the edge of town and watch
the wicked scribbles fracture darkness

then thunder’s absence strikes me
the sound not reaching as far as the light
